2 hazards that come with retail work

Retail is a fast-paced industry that requires workers to have a vast array of skills. Some people may think that retail workers have a safe job; however, there are several hazards that can lead to significant injuries.

The onus is on the employer to ensure that retail workers have the safest work environment possible. Setting protocols, writing out standard operating procedures and providing workers with the tools they need may help to reduce the risks.

1. Falling objects

Retail workers have to handle merchandise, some of which may be in overhead spaces. Those items can fall and strike the employee. Because of this, merchandise on shelves must be stacked properly to reduce the risk of merchandise falling or shelving units tipping over. Ideally, this will mean heavier items on lower shelves and bulky items where they’re the easiest to reach and move.

2. Repetitive motion

Some retail workers, particularly those who serve as cashiers, perform the same motions over and over each shift. They may suffer from cumulative trauma injuries, which often don’t seem like big problems, but they can quickly turn into injuries that require surgical intervention. Using proper body mechanics is one of the most effective ways to prevent these injuries from occurring.

Retail workers who suffer an injury at work should notify their employer so the workers’ compensation process can be initiated. Getting immediate medical attention is critical. For more serious injuries, there may be benefits beyond medical coverage that are possible through workers’ compensation coverage.
