Nurses spend their careers trying to make others feel better. For the most part, this is appreciated and nurses find the job tiring but rewarding.

Nonetheless, workplace violence toward nurses is extremely prevalent. In fact, some have described this phenomenon as an epidemic

Why are so many nurses being attacked?

Vulnerable patients can turn violent

Patients are often admitted to hospitals with more than physical issues. They may have mental health issues or substance addictions. While these issues are not guaranteed to cause violence, they do present a significant risk factor. People with undiagnosed and untreated mental health conditions are more prone to violence.

Emergency departments are high-stress

Nurses who work in the emergency room (ER) are more susceptible to violent attacks. These areas of a hospital can be chaotic, with lots of movement and concerned family members. Should someone pass away, those close to them understandably become upset and agitated. Unfortunately, this can come out as violence and nurses can take the brunt of this.

Understaffing is a contributor

Ultimately, hospitals are run as businesses. This means that they have to remain profitable. It is no secret that there is currently a nursing staff shortage, and this is a contributor to violence. Nurses are often left tending to vulnerable patients without anybody watching their back.

Being a nurse is very demanding, but that doesn’t mean nurses should face violent attacks. Whether you have suffered physical or mental injuries on the job, workers’ compensation may be an option. Seeking legal guidance will help you assess your options in more detail.
