Hazards linemen face as they work on the electric grid

Electric linemen are the unsung heroes who work behind the scenes to ensure we all enjoy electricity’s comforts and necessities. Whether restoring power after a storm or maintaining the electrical infrastructure, these professionals often work in hazardous conditions to keep our lives running smoothly.

Despite the critical nature of their job, the dangers these workers face can be underestimated. From high voltage to inclement weather, linemen work under conditions that require meticulous safety protocols and constant vigilance.

Risks from high-voltage

Working closely with electrical lines means linemen are continuously exposed to the risk of electrocution. Even with safety equipment and protocols in place, one small mistake can be fatal. Severe injuries, including burns and cardiac arrest, are possible.

Facing inclement weather conditions

Linemen don’t have the luxury of waiting for perfect weather. They often must perform their duties in less-than-ideal conditions, including wind and rain. Working in such circumstances makes their job physically challenging and increases the risk of accidents like slips, trips and falls.

Working at heights and confined spaces

Another hazard electric linemen face is working at considerable heights, often while carrying heavy equipment. Fall risks require linemen to use fall protection systems and other safety gear consistently. Additionally, they sometimes have to work in confined spaces like underground vaults, where the risk of suffocation and exposure to hazardous substances exists.

Add in the physical and mental exhaustion that often plagues these professionals, and it’s easy to see why this profession is dangerous. When linemen suffer injuries, they need to get medical care right away. Workers’ compensation should cover that expense and others directly related to the injuries.
