If you are injured on the job, you expect to receive workers’ compensation benefits that cover your medical expenses, lost wages and other accident-related losses. However, in some situations, your claim may be denied.

While this can be overwhelming and stressful, you can appeal the decision. It can also be helpful to know some of the reasons your claim may be denied

Failure to report your injury on time

Each state has specific laws regarding when a workplace accident must be reported. In California, it’s required that you file your claim within 30 days. Failure to do this can result in you losing your right to ever receive workers’ compensation benefits. 

Your employer disputes the claim

Sometimes, your employer may state that your injury wasn’t caused at work. They may also claim that the injury occurred because of horseplay or some other reason that would disqualify you from benefits. 

Minimal evidence that the injury is work-related

If your employer states that the accident and injury did not occur at work, it’s up to you to provide evidence that it did. Sometimes, seeking another medical exam can help prove that the incident was work-related. 

You failed to seek medical treatment

It’s essential that you report your accident and seek medical treatment right away after a work-related accident. Keep in mind that the medical treatment must be provided by an insurance-approved doctor to be covered.
